Court call for enrolment records from ECO

ITANAGAR, Sept 19: Gauhati High Court Itanagar Permanent Bench directed the Chief Electoral Officer of the state to call for records relating to the irregularities brought to the attention of the Court regarding the enrolment of ten people including Taba Dipu Welly, wife of Atum Welly in 12- Pakke Kessang Assembly Constituency.

During the presentation of the writs it was pointed out to the court that all names had been rejected by the ERO but without filing an appeal as is the prescribed procedure to Chief Electoral Officer, the said voters were able to get their names in the voters list by relying on orders made by persons without authority.

The orders also lacked in consistency in as much as one omnibus order allowing 20 persons to register which does not have date and another ten orders are based on a vague residence certificate having contradictions in date carried on them

The court has directed the CEO to call for records and do the needful before September 25, the last day for nomination and correction of electoral rolls.

In another writ petition, the Gauhati High Court Itanagar Permanent Bench on September 17 took serious exception to the non compliance of its direction to the chief secretary to provide it with information and status of complaint by local persons regarding the Land Possession Certificates in forest land in Seijosa area.

The court directed the state chief secretary to appraise the court about the fate of the representation filed by the petitioners and furnish a copy of the order if any has been passed on or before October 20 next.

With today’s nomination the total nominations filed so far was four since yesterday for the October 13 Assembly polls in the state.

Filing of papers will close on September 25 and scrutiny will take place the next day. Last date for withdrawal is September 29.

Arunachal Pradesh has a 60-member Assembly and the Congress during the 2004 elections bagged 34 seats and BJP 9.

While Arunachal Congress, a regional party and NCP won in two seats each the rest 13 went to the Independents.

However, all the BJP MLAs including both the NCP members merged with Congress and all the Independents became associate members of the ruling party thereby making the presence of the opposition virtually nil in the House.

For the first time Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF), a Nagaland-based party is planning to field 16 candidates in Tirap and Changlang districts.

Congress is synonymous to corruption: Modi

RANJIT SINHA

ITANAGAR, Sept 19: With the Assembly elections few weeks away, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister  and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi has fired  the  first salvo  from the battle of ballot at the  grand old political party of the country today.

“The Congress is synonymous to corruption and price rise” said Modi while addressing the election rally-cum-manifesto release function  held at Naharlagun today.

All the North Eastern states have come under the scanner of various agencies because of  corruption being practiced by the Congress since long, the BJP leader  said while kick starting the poll campaign in the state.

Modi claimed that BJP while in power at Centre had always maintained stability in prices of essential commodities, but  the people began to see the red as soon as the Congress took over the charge again to decide the destiny of the country.

Democracy becomes successful where the voice of the people is heard through Opposition in highest body. But in Arunachal Pradesh, the opposition is either made voiceless or forced to merge with the ruling party, in a way turning the democracy into autocracy. And where autocracy rules, corruption surfaces from nowhere, Modi maintained.

Pointing out the opt-repeated claim of China over the whole of Arunchal Pradesh, Chinese incursion in Indian Territory, objection to the Dalai Lama’s visit to Tawang, ADB loan,  the veteran BJP leader said that   during last three years more than 200 incursions occurred and  the  incursion figure is 76  in last three months. The Congress Govt is not serious about the security issue of the country, especially the security of the people of the frontier state like Arunachal Pradesh, Modi alleged and demanded white paper from the Govt on the report of Chinese incursion.

Expressing surprise over the alleged pathetic road condition of the state and irregular/non-supply of electricity, the BJP leader promised that if voted to power the party will provide free electricity to economically weaker sections and produce 45,000MW hydel power  in a five years period and improve the road link at par with national mainstream.

Addressing the gathering, Lichi Legi, BJP candidate from the Itanagar constituency said that  unlike  the past during his  tenure as minister  and MLA, the law and order situation in the Capital has been deteriorating rapidly. He promised to bring all-round development if voted to power including the safety and security of the people of the Capital Complex.

Former MP and BJP leader Tapir Gao said  time has come to defeat the  party in power which made Arunachal Pradesh number  one corrupt state.  Many central Govt  schemes for the poor and downtrodden have been  sanctioned,  fund in crores pumped in for the development of the state,  but in ground level  the condition of the people remains the same and there is no sign of development.

Party election incharge H Pratap also spoke on the occasion and appealed the people not to succumb to money politics.
